  1. La verdad de la no verdad

    Consideraciones sobre la ficción desde la Teoría Crítica y Friedrich Nietzsche

    The essay examines the status of fiction in two registers. In the first, instrumental reason and the culture industry in Adorno and Horkheimer, with Enlightenment considered as myth. In the second, fiction as a problem of truth in Friedrich Nietzsche, read through Massimo Cacciari and Peter Sloterdijk. Running through both registers is the question of what individuality is possible under such conditions.

  2. La ficción como problema metafísico

    Encubrimiento y apariencia en El dios que baila y De la esencia de la verdad

    A crossed reading of Massimo Cacciari's “El dios que baila” and Martin Heidegger's “On the Essence of Truth”. The essay examines the status of non-truth in both: concealment as part of the very essence of truth in Heidegger, and the falsifying faculty of art as a metaphysical problem in Cacciari's reading of Nietzsche. At stake is what relation philosophy keeps with the appearance it cannot leave behind.

    Panorama sobre el estado del cine costarricense

    A survey of Costa Rican cinema arranged in four waves, from founding costumbrismo to the auteur cinema of the festival circuit. The text examines the conditions of production and circulation of this last stage: the overlap of filmmaker, curator and juror within a single circuit, and the consolidation of “the Central American” as a generic category.

  4. Materias ardientes

    El espacio como archivo vivo en el documental centroamericano

    An analysis of five Central American documentaries by way of the notion of the ruin-space. The text inverts Bachelard's approach — attending to the space that repels rather than the one that shelters — and examines, through Derrida's “Archive Fever”, the problem of selection and silence in any act of archiving.

  5. La negligencia de sí

    El concepto de negligencia en El pensamiento del afuera como forma de ser opuesta al control de sí en Las tecnologías del yo, de Michel Foucault

    A comparative study of Michel Foucault's “Technologies of the Self” and “The Thought of the Outside”. The essay isolates the concept of negligence, taken from the chapter “Being Attracted and Negligent”, and examines it against the technologies of the self of contemporary subjectivity, oriented towards self-improvement and self-control.

  6. Los secretos de Isolina: neocostumbrismo, reflejos y distorsiones

    An analysis of the images of “Los secretos de Isolina” (Miguel Salguero, 1986) apart from its plot. Against the narrative reading that dominates the film's existing bibliography, the text proposes a typology of its images drawn from the Deleuzian categories of action-image, large form and small form, and examines the place costumbrismo occupies between the two poles.

  7. El montaje y su doble

    Una estética del montaje post-cinematográfico a partir del cortometraje paródico-experimental El Vergel de los Sueños Húmedos

    The essay considers montage as an autonomous object of study, separated from the drama it serves and from the continuity procedures it sustains. It starts from Vincent Amiel's aesthetics of montage and sets it in relation to Deleuze and Guattari, Artaud, and Casetti's notion of the persistence of cinema, in order to examine its status in a post-cinematic context.   8. Matemas y fantasmas

    The article discusses Daniel Fairfax's reading of the post-structuralist period of Cahiers du cinéma, in the chapter “Beyond Structuralism: Film Form and Écriture” of The Red Years of Cahiers du cinéma (1968–1973). By way of “Archive Fever” and “Limited Inc”, it examines the frame through which both the magazine and Fairfax appropriate Derrida, and poses the problem in other terms: the cinematic as a category of writing.
