David Loynaz

Bio

David Loynaz holds a degree in Film and Television from Universidad Veritas, which he entered after winning the EDI scholarship. He is a co-founder of Camarote Films, an independent production company where he has directed and written music videos, video art pieces, and both fiction and documentary projects. He read for a degree in Philosophy at the Universidad de Costa Rica, took a postgraduate programme in Contemporary Philosophical Problems at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and is currently taking a Master's in Advanced Studies in Philosophy at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

As a co-writer, he worked on the short film La noche rota, screened at Mecal 2022 (Barcelona) and at the Sehsüchte Film Festival 2022 (Berlin). He directed the documentary short Colores, made as part of the Puntos Culturales programme of Costa Rica's Ministry of Culture. His work El vergel de los sueños húmedos was selected at international festivals including EstoEsParaEsto and Videotitlán (Mexico and Chile), as well as the National Short Film Competition at the Shnit Festival 2021 (Costa Rica). He was also the producer and editor of the short film Albura, selected at the Ícaro Central American International Film Festival and at the Costa Rica International Film Festival, and winner of the Best Central American Experimental Short Film award at the 2025 edition of the Ícaro Festival.

In 2023 he began the film project Trilogía Decimonónica, a series of three fiction shorts that critically explore the construction of colonial and republican identity in Costa Rica: Erizo (premiered at the Ícaro Central American International Film Festival and at the Costa Rica International Film Festival, and shown at the Central American Film Showcase in Vienna and the Costa Rican Film Showcase in Canada organised by the Embassy of Costa Rica); El deseado (premiered at the Costa Rica International Film Festival and selected in competition at the Shnit International Short Film Festival 2024); and El poder de la ficción es terrible, completed in October 2025, premiered at the Costa Rica International Film Festival (CRFIC) 2026 and winner of the Jury Award for Best Costa Rican Short Film.
